DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Monika Ritsch‐Marte University Innsbruck\, Austri
a\, Rainer Heintzmann University Jena\, Germany\, Ivo Ihrke University Si
egen\, Germany\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhile optical microscopy has a history of se
veral hundred years and has led to countless discoveries\, it is still a v
ery dynamic research area. Innovation in the area is increasingly influenc
ed by computational approaches\, in particular inverse problems\, coding t
heory (e.g. sparse coding)\, optimization\, and most recently\, large scal
e machine learning. Continued advances will enable further breakthroughs a
nd innovation exports to other scientific disciplines. \nWhile many techn
iques still mainly perform an automated post-processing of microscopic ima
ges\, increasingly employing machine learning\, the area of computational
microscopy aims at fundamentally merging system design and computation wit
h the goal of improving performance\, contrast\, speed and the dimensional
ity of imaging. \nA challenge in the development of the field is the wide
variety of background knowledge that is necessary to tackle the challenge
s: physicists often struggle with developing efficient and high-performanc
e algorithms\, while not many computer scientists have the in-depth physic
al understanding to develop novel microscopy schemes. Mathematical develop
ments concern novel simulation and optimization schemes\, convergence guar
antees\, etc. For sustained progress\, the development of an interdiscipli
nary exchange and\, in the mid-term\, the development of a cohesive subfie
ld is a necessity.\nThe proposed seminar aims to bring together researcher
s from the different fields to define and address the challenges in Comput
ational Optical Microscopy lying ahead.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe conference language
will be English. The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation bears the cost o
 f full-board accommodation for all participants.\n\nhttps://indico.we-hera
