DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Prof. Dr. Lars Schäfer Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RU
B)\, Thais Schroeder Rossi\, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB)\, Prof. Dr. Ka
 rina Morgenstern\, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB)\n\n\n\n\n\nGeometrical c
onfinement is relevant to various disciplines\, ranging from the natural s
ciences via the life sciences to the material science field. Confinement e
ffects have far-reaching influences. They shape efficient hydrodynamic flo
ws\, deepen the understanding of biological processes\, advance carbon cap
ture technologies\, and provide new chemical reactivities. So far\, much o
f the research has focused on demonstrating the importance of confinement
in physical and chemical systems while neglecting the fundamental principl
es that govern these effects. Thus\, not much is known about how and why e
xactly confinement effects modulate key physical phenomena\, alter reactiv
ities\, or change product selectivity and material properties. As a result
\, essential questions remain unanswered — what are the underlying physi
cal mechanisms at play in confinement\, and how do they alter atomic inter
actions and influence dynamical properties?Whereas selected specific cases
and systems have been studied by experimental computational means\, the p
rediction of confinement effects remains challenging due to a lack of gene
ral rules and a common language. With the help of the WE-Heraeus foundatio
n\, we will bring together experimentalists and theoreticians to discuss r
ecent findings\, match these with confinement effects in 2D\, 1D\, or 0D s
paces\, and develop general guidelines that will be applied in calculation
s and machine learning. In the interdisciplinary WE-Heraeus seminar\, we wi
ll connect early career researchers with established scientists to create
solid scientific networks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe conference language will
be English. The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation bears the cost of ful
 l-board accommodation for all participants.\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://indico.we-h
